Essential Motivation in the Classroom - Ian Gilbert: I read this book just after I finished my training to be a teacher, before I started teaching in an inner London school. It is stilll my firm favourite for preparing you for the realities of motivating students and I always lend my copy to trainees and NQTs.
How to be a Brilliant English Teacher - Trevor Wright:
I read this book during my PGCE year, especially since the author was our university moderator and I was one of the students being moderated. It is packed with practical advice which you can easily implement into your classroom. It also includes sections on teaching Shakespeare, lesson objectives, drama and assessment.
